creative challenges, flexing writing muscles, short stories, thoughts, writing

I wrote my first short story long, long ago after taking a class on getting published where I learned that to get published you had to be published.

I know.

But it made/makes sense, publishers were/are more likely to work with someone who had experience. So…one of the suggestions was to write a short story for a contest or to submit to a magazine, because getting those published should be a bit easier than a book.

Okay. I figured I could do it! I had written a 100,000 word manuscript…what was 2,000 words, right?

Well, I did. But I learned that shorts are a whole other beast.

Getting a set up, a conflict, a climax in 2,000 words is tough. But doing it is good for my brain, flexing different writing muscles and challenging the creative gray matter.

I have found a love of writing short stories. An obsession, maybe.

Or maybe not.

Maybe my brain knows what it’s doing…what it wants. I write shorts in spurts. I didn’t realize it until lately, but I do. Right now, I am working on the third short in a row…I think it’s number three. I get caught up in anthologies looking for creepy stories. My brain lights a signal fire that says HEY I HAVE AN IDEA FOR THIS ONE! So I write…I submit.

And the current manuscript gets set aside.

But YOU SHOULD REALLY BE WORKING ON THAT MANUSCRIPT!

Maybe. Or maybe I need to flex the short story muscles, challenge my creativity. Writing shorts reminds me to be mindful of word usage, to pay attention to pacing, to use all my writing knowledge to get a whole story told in as few words as possible, to let my mind go wild and come up with a unique story.

There’s no room for info dumps. There’s no time to mess around with backstory. All the subtle hints have to be powerful.

Shorts carry a punch.

I can usually get a short polished in a month. Not very long, but it sure wears me out. After these last few, I noticed that I’m done. I am ready to go back to my newest manuscript and focus on it. But that’s normal. Looking back on my writing life, I will break from longer work to dive into shorts. I need it. My mind needs it. That obsession I think I have…maybe it’s necessary. Maybe it’s the way my writing brain works. I am definitely going to let it do what it needs.

This final creepy TV story is due at the end of this month. I am ready for it to be sent. I am ready to go back to Nowhere with Ember, my workouts in pacing and words and power complete. I’ll wait and see if any of these submissions are accepted.

At some point next year, the shorts will call again. And I will answer, ready for the challenge and hopefully becoming a better writer.

We gotta do what we gotta do.

deadlines, panic, short stories, writing, writing is hard

I have to write a short story.

This should thrill me! I love this! Except the deadline is close.

Cue panic.

Cue trying to force the story into being.

Cue failure.

Cue me beating myself over the head because I’m doing this wrong.

I have images in my head. However, the pictures aren’t coming together to form something solid. I scribble everything I know… I write down whatever comes into my head… I cram all the pieces together and cry when it doesn’t work.

writingnick-miller-got-nothin

It’s not working. I’m missing something. A thought. An idea. An image. A spark. I’m missing the one thing that will drive this tale. I’ll find it. I will. Maybe all it needs is for me to start writing. Maybe all it needs is for me to take a nap.

There are stories that write themselves. There are stories we have to dig out of our minds with a shovel and pickaxe.  Ow.

Excerpt
To Undreamed Shoes by Cortney Pearson

I bask in the brisk air, hands aching while the pocket of pain still gnaws at my shoulder.

“That moon shines on those other places, just like it does here in Bohemia. I want to see it from somewhere else. To see what it’s like, knowing something so constant is with me no matter where I go.”

Cove stares at the moon. After several moments he says, “I have something I’d like to show you. Will you come for a ride with me?”

“What, you mean now?”

He laughs, “Yes, now.”

“But I’m—” Sweaty, dirty. Dreadfully behind on this order. If I have any chance of going with Christabel in a few weeks, I’ve got to step it up—I haven’t even started on her pots yet.

Cove takes my hand and, as with last night, I’m instantly aware of how smooth his skin is against the rough spots on mine.

Critiques, Revisions, and Edits… *brain explodes*

I am a people pleaser. I want people to like me.

So when I receive critiques, I immediately want to go forth and change everything so everyone will like my words! And that causes major frustration.

cryingunderdesk

Why? Because it’s not only impossible, but VERY VERY WRONG!

Last weekend I went through four rounds of edits for my short literary horror story PERFECTION, which will be published in DIN, New Mexico State University’s online magazine. Every time I got notes, I immediately went to CHANGE EVERYTHING TO JUST WHAT SHE SAID.

Punctuation. Yes.

Moving that sentence there, or a paragraph there… no problem. It sounds better that way.

Then there are word choices… sentence structure… adding more inner character thoughts. And as I held my finger over the delete key, I paused. Alarms went off in my head.

minionsbeedo

WAIT! That’s not how I want it to read. But she doesn’t like how it is… I HAVE to change it, don’t I? Is my story turning into something I don’t want it to be?

DING. DING. DING. Give me a prize!

MY STORY!

In the end, I get to choose. So I read her thoughts and had to decide how I wanted my story to go. And sometimes out of the process, I wrote an even better sentence or added another layer, not quite what my editor suggested, but something from out of my brain, something inspired by the story and what I wanted the story to be.

Editors and critique partners aren’t there to rewrite your words, but to push you to dig deeper… TO INSPIRE YOUR WORDS!

drwhoallonsy

Yesterday I went to my writers’ group meeting with the fabulous Summit City Scribes of Fort Wayne, Indiana. And I read my newest short story, a gothic-ish horror called COUNTDOWN. And I had a lot of feedback that my brain is still processing.

DrWho17

I have a decision. What do I want my story to be? Only when I know, can take all the comments and make my story better. (Which I need to do NOW, because submission deadline is Saturday. Yeah. No pressure.)

This is a perfect lesson for me right at this moment. I am waiting (waiting is HARD!) for notes from my editor on my soon to be published book. When that e-mail arrives, hopefully soon (EEEK! *crosses fingers*) I might suffer a heart attack, a slight moment of panic… utter terror!!!!!!

HPrelaxhermoinegif

Until I remember that everything she suggests… are suggestions, comments meant to inspire me to make the story flow and make the characters shine. After having tried to make the ms better by myself, I now have a partner, someone who wants my story to be the best it can be, but still wants it to be MY STORY!

Maleficentwonderful

So as I critique the words of the #nestpitch members of #TeamEggsellent and send out a few critiques to #nestpitchers who didn’t make it to the final round, I make comments in the spirit of inspiring them to make their stories shine, to add something that maybe they hadn’t thought of. And if they don’t like any of my comments… no big deal. It’s their story.

Let’s celebrate our stories and what makes them ours. Writing is hard. Critique partners and editors, who love helping fellow writers on their journey, should lift us up, make us excited about our words.

Comfortable Shorts

a new path, fear, getting out of a rut, procrastination, short stories, writing

I find myself finished with my movie series and wondering what to blog about. *stares at screen*

emmastonepththt

However, one subject has invaded my mind.

Short stories.

These marvelous little bits of fiction have taken over my life. Invaded my brain. Become a comfy place to live.

Ten years ago when I began to learn about how to get published… the idea of publishing a short story was introduced to my head. I found a short story competition that called for UP TO 2000 words. BUT I CAN’T WRITE ANYTHING SHORT ARE YOU NUTS?

birdcageIcan't

But I did. And it taught me that every word is important in the telling of the story, that extra phrases bog down the tale. Strong writing isn’t full of words, it pulses with images and emotion.

And I began my journey to being a short story writer.

After two years of rewriting two manuscripts, I wanted a break. Last October I wrote all sorts of flash fiction, my first attempt at anything under 500 words. And had a blast! And realized that I really liked (and was capable) of writing horror.

supernaturaldean

I wrote WEAKNESS for The Pen and Muse blog. Last November I wrote four stories for the ProjectREUTSway competition, one of which will appear in their upcoming anthology and the other three will appear on their blog sometime this spring and summer. Last March, my short fiction piece CLICK was featured by Julie Hutchings on her blog DeadlyEverAfter.

I just kept going. I’M ON A ROOOOLLLLLLLL!

avengersi-think-i-did-okay

Every time I discovered a call for short story submissions, I thought I CAN DO THAT!

I submitted three others, two of which have been accepted. The third, I decided to sub elsewhere too, just because it’s been a few months. And I have two more (a frozen fairy tale fantasy and a madness, creepy horror) I am working on to submit this month and next.

Whoa… so upcoming… two stories in two different anthologies and another in an online literary magazine. Three more on a blog. And we’ll have to be patient and wait for news of the other three.

I LOVE THIS!

But… am I using short stories as an excuse not to write the thing I should be?

Zooeymeh

Yup. I do believe so. But in my defense, I am pretty darn good at the shorts. And they are helping to get my name out there. At least my procrastinating was somewhat… good. Right?

We all know, once Kathy is comfy, she is less likely to move.

Leloleavemealone

Shorts are comfy. I know them. But after these two stories, I’m throwing my shorts away. For a while anyway. I do have edits for DOORS that will eventually appear in my in-box. And the sequel waits, forever forming in my brain.

I will crawl out of my rut, even though it is a REALLY nice rut, and try to forge my way through something new.

NOT SOMETHING NEW?!?!?!?!

HPpanic

We all have to do it. What kind of life would we have if we never set foot on a different path? What kind of people would we be if we never accepted a challenge?

I don’t want to know.

So go forth! Try something new!

I am exhausted… from smiling. From screaming in glee. From experiencing dreams coming true.

855126

I am celebrating.

I shall never come down off my cloud. And if this is a dream, a vision, a bit of undigested beef… DON’T WAKE ME!

I do have doubts as to whether this is real life, doubts if what happened actually happened. However the evidence exists.

First…

tumblr_m4yj4g7mGd1rnbl71

I have signed with REUTS PUBLISHING to publish my YA fantasy DOORS! Read all about it here! What a great write-up… if I think about it too long… *sniff*

All the congratulations from FB and Twitter still shine in my heart. What a fabulous day. I’ll only ever get that experience once, the day it is announced that my debut book will be published. Wow. Just wow. I soaked in all the emotion. I laughed. I cried. I screamed sporadically during the day, scaring my family. So many times have I congratulated people for signing with an agent or publisher, for their triumphs. It was seriously surreal to be on the other side of that table.

SO THANK YOU! To everyone for being a part of such a great day. I still can’t believe it. However, when the list of edits arrives in my inbox… I’ll sing a different tune. But I’m ready. This is all happening at the exact time it should. The Universe knows what it is doing, even though waiting for it proved difficult. I did work pretty darn hard.

Anyway… today, the announcement of the short story competition ProjectREUTSway winners and runner ups were announced. Out of four stories, I have one winner, which will be published in an upcoming anthology, and three runner ups, which will be posted on Reuts blog! Not too shabby. You can go see all the winners here.

That is no easy competition! So YEA FOR ALL WHO PARTICIPATED!

applause-harry-potter

There is one other piece of awesome news, an opportunity I couldn’t pass up and am SO excited to be a part of, but I will wait to announce that, things must be done. I know, that’s mean.

I had doubts, serious doubts, that I would ever get here. But I kept working, kept putting myself out there, and through it all BELIEVED!

To my writers’ group The Summit City Scribes of Fort Wayne… THANK YOU for listening to all my words and giving all the comments, giving such great support. Judy, I might not have found REUTS Publishers if you hadn’t pointed me in their direction.

My dear, Elsie Elmore, who has been a fabulous CP. What a wonderful person to have on my side! Thank you!

To my newest critique partners, I look forward to Sundays because of you! Natasha! Emma! Diana! You guys rock!

tumblr_ngm1j7m9FN1u2wtino1_500

You know I couldn’t resist adding that pic, my walruses!

I don’t even have words for Rena, Sarah, Jamie and Heather! I love you guys.

tumblr_inline_n0x9dej1lM1so9nb1

And to my new Reuts family! Kisa, Ashley, Summer, Melody, and Cary. I’m sure I’m forgetting people! Ah! I am truly honored and blessed to be part of such a marvelous team. I can’t wait to get to work!

And this is just the beginning.

Short Story Magic

acceptance, fun, reading, rejection, short stories, thoughts, writing, writing contests

I like short stories.

I read them because they’re fun. I especially like the stories that hit me like an episode of the Twilight Zone, leaving a bit of strange in my brain or feelings in my heart. Ones that change me. Novels can do that too, but with shorts it’s more of a … BAM!

I started writing shorts to acquire publishing credits. Ten years ago, when I began typing words, e-books were not everywhere, you could submit to bigger publishers, and having publishing credits in your query was good and that letter to the editor I wrote just wouldn’t cut it. Overall, the idea of needing to be published to get published seemed a little crazy to me and I feared my head would explode, still do, but I pushed on. I wrote a couple of short stories and sent them to Writer’s Digest Short Story Competition. And I received an honorable mention (meaning I finished somewhere between 11 and 100). Yea for me! Holy moly! Maybe I can do this writer thing.

But writing shorts taught me something I hadn’t expected. The contest had word limits. I had to pick and choose what words were really necessary for the story. I learned to cut, delete, say good-bye to the needless ramblings I love so much. That doesn’t mean I don’t write too many words all the time, it just means that I know I do it and will at some point recognize it and throw them away.

I kept at this short story thing and entered more. Some didn’t do anything, but I won another honorable mention. Not quite as thrilling as the first, but good for me. I took one of the stories that hadn’t placed, rewrote it, and sent it to a magazine. And it was accepted. Possibly you heard me scream in joy. Although the honorable mentions were fun, I had a desire to see my name listed in the magazine in the top ten list. I entered one final time and my story placed ninth. Mission complete.

Last fall I entered the ProjectReutsway competition and had SO MUCH FUN! Deadlines and frantic writing and rewriting made me all warm and fuzzy. All the friends I discovered being the icing on the cake. Two of my four stories won their place in the upcoming anthology from Reuts publishers. One will be featured on their ProjectReutsway runner-up tour on their blog (found each Thursday). The final story, I rewrote, with a little help from a fabulous CP, and sent to a magazine. Now I wait.

But because I have this blog, which can’t reject me, I have been dying to share what I write (good or bad), I added a page, a sample of what I do. My YA fantasy/humor The Day after I Died, Part 1 is a new addition to the menu. Check it out. Tell me what you think. Good or bad, I love all comments. Hopefully it leaves a bit of weird in your head and laughter in your heart.

Short stories carry their own magic. For writers we have less words to create a world or characters, to hold a reader’s attention and give that reader something entertaining. I learned a lot writing shorts and have become attached to reading them. I love Stephen King’s shorts and get my fix of twisted fairy tales each Thursday at Reuts publishers blog.

Anyone else out there like short stories? Writing them? Reading them? Or both?

Sharing my search for magic in everything.
