Careful with that Opinion… It’s Sharp

Opinions are fabulous things. Seriously! We all get to have our own! I don’t have to share.

drwhonice

But they can be dangerous. Because people like to share them, and not in the “hey, this is what I think, isn’t that cool” sharing, but the “THIS IS MY OPINION, IT IS RIGHT, IT IS GOOD, WHY DON’T YOU THINK THIS WAY” sharing.

I am Catholic. Mom forced me to go to church every Sunday. I still go. My kids have been baptized and are going to religious education classes to be confirmed. Catholics are funny creatures. At mass, I hear words of acceptance, then hear how people need to change.

Wait…

Minion1

To be Catholic, you HAVE TO believe everything the church does.

And… that doesn’t sit well with me.

Annakendrickno

See, my mom told us, “God gave you your own mind, so you can USE it!” And I told my kids the same thing. I tell them when my opinion differs from the church… or from any group. God also gave us reasoning. So listen to all the opinions, then form your own.

But there’s more to it. God granted us with compassion.

Opinions can cut if wielded without understanding. When our beliefs are challenged, we tend to take a defensive stand. Break out the sword and shield, kids, there’s a battle. But wait… no, there’s not.

Maybe there’s just sharing ideas. Maybe there’s listening and learning. And when we can’t share nicely, maybe there’s just a point when we stop talking at each other and go get ice cream.

YEA!

fullhouseeatingicecream

Because there’s no reason to fight over being right. There’s no reason to change people.

I am pro-choice, have been for years. I have my own reasons to not believe what my religion has told me to believe. And I am happy this way.

I also support gay marriage, yet another deviation from what my religion says.

This doesn’t make me a bad person. Please do not try to sway me. And I won’t tell anyone to believe what I do. We can all live here peacefully. I am a person of faith.

Faith can unite the world.

Like I tell kids who look at me funny when I spout my weird thoughts… You have your opinions, I’ll have mine, and we can still be friends.

I’m excited. You? You should be. I can’t wait to read this and am honored to help reveal Summer’s (she’s awesome you should go follow her on Twitter and FB… and everywhere) cover for her upcoming book!

drwhofantastic

It’s SO PRETTY!

link-final-front

For seventeen-year-old Kira, there’s no better way to celebrate a birthday than being surrounded by friends and huddled beside a campfire deep in the woods. And with a birthday in the peak of summer, that includes late night swims under the stars.

Or at least, it used to.

Kira’s relaxing contemplation of the universe is interrupted when a piece of it falls, colliding with her and starting a chain of events that could unexpectedly lead to the one thing in her life that’s missing—her father.

Tossed into a pieced-together world of carnivals and gypsies, an old-fashioned farmhouse, and the alluring presence of a boy from another planet, Kira discovers she’s been transported to the center of a black hole, and there’s more to the story than science can explain. She’s now linked by starlight to the world inside the darkness. And her star is dying.

If she doesn’t return home before the star’s light disappears and her link breaks, she’ll be trapped forever. But she’s not the only one ensnared, and with time running out, she’ll have to find a way to save a part of her past and a part of her future, or risk losing everything she loves.

Dreamy, fluid, and beautiful, LINK pairs the mystery of science fiction with the minor-key melody of a dark fantasy, creating a tale that is as human as it is out of this world.

Summer Wier Author PhotoSummer Wier grew up spending Saturdays with a maxed out library card and her nose in a book. But as much as she loved reading, and even writing, both took the back seat when it came to career choices. With her sights set on law school, corporate greatness, and even a hankering to become the first female president, she set off to conquer the world. As life would have it, though, she didn’t attend law school, nor did she become president (although, one day, your vote may be appreciated), finding her strengths, instead, in accounting and business management. After finishing her MBA, she revived her love for reading and began writing with dreams of finishing a book of her own. When Summer isn’t working, reading, or writing, she’s trying to keep up with two energetic girls and her husband, and dreaming of the mountains of Montana.

LINK is her debut young adult sci-fi novel, the first in THE SHADOW OF LIGHT trilogy.

#pitmad, #SFFpit, faith, keep trying, pitching, publishing, rejections, writing

Today another Twitter pitch contest is taking over my Twitter feed. #SFFpit for sci-fi and fantasy mss in every category.

drwhomasterspecacular

I am retweeting my favorites, like a good girl, because favoriting is for agents and editors and publishers.

I am not these.

I am a writer. I am a reader.

So many of these tiny pitches catch my eye or more exactly catch my brain. I want to read them. But in the sea of pitches that will flood Twitter, how many stand a chance to be seen? It’s crazy. The 140 character pitches that writers poured their heart and soul in march along the screen to vanish into the crowd. Some will be overlooked.

And magic will happen for others.

As I gaze at the parade of pitches today, ones I recognize wave at me. I saw them… heck I retweeted them… at #pitmad – another Twitter pitch party that happened not long ago.

There’s one that called to me in #pitmad and when its pitch rolled past me today, I stopped and thought “No one’s picked this up yet? I WANT THIS BOOK!” Why isn’t the magic happening?

willywonkaTantrum-Throwing-a-fit-Veruca-Salt-GIF

Now there could be a million reasons why. There ARE a million reasons why. And most of these reasons are out of the author’s control. Magic is a slippery little sucker.

The author hones their pitch and tweets it just the right amount of times (seriously, it’s an art). But it could very well march by the eyes that need to see it, that want to see it. Maybe it gets requests and nothing comes of those, for who knows what reasons.

drwhoshrug

This strange world of writing and publishing is impossible to navigate. There are tips. There are rules. There are guidelines. But mostly we wait for the stars to align. For the right ms to land in the perfect hands, for eyes to meet across the room and BLAM-O…

fireworks2

So why? Who knows. We’ll probably never really understand the magic. I mean magic… kinda undefinable, uncatchable, unwhateverable.

Tinkerbellharumph

All we can do is keep trying, keep reaching for the dream. And have faith. Dreams do come true. The magic is weird, but not broken.

Excerpt
To Undreamed Shoes by Cortney Pearson

I bask in the brisk air, hands aching while the pocket of pain still gnaws at my shoulder.

“That moon shines on those other places, just like it does here in Bohemia. I want to see it from somewhere else. To see what it’s like, knowing something so constant is with me no matter where I go.”

Cove stares at the moon. After several moments he says, “I have something I’d like to show you. Will you come for a ride with me?”

“What, you mean now?”

He laughs, “Yes, now.”

“But I’m—” Sweaty, dirty. Dreadfully behind on this order. If I have any chance of going with Christabel in a few weeks, I’ve got to step it up—I haven’t even started on her pots yet.

Cove takes my hand and, as with last night, I’m instantly aware of how smooth his skin is against the rough spots on mine.

When Ilia discovers he’s run to the one place she’s running from, she’s forced to face her most painful memories back in her hometown, Bearwood.

There, Ilia finds herself face to face with Nathaniel, an insanely hot vampire, and despite the evidence he’s working for her enemy, Ilia can’t fight her attraction to him, especially when he seems to show up whenever she needs him most.

But Nathaniel is keeping secrets and as they begin to unravel, instead of running away from him, Ilia finds herself falling for him. When his last secret is revealed Ilia’s past comes together in a way she never imagined and she’s left with only one option: trust Nathaniel to help her kill Sol, or risk relinquishing her new found strength thus causing catastrophic and devastating consequences for her and everyone she loves.

Ilia begins a gut-wrenching battle to save her life and the lives of her friends, a battle which not everyone will survive.

A vampire tale like none other, love, pain, devastation and revenge, all weave together to create the first in a dark and unmissable new adult series.

My daughter got her hair colored today, blue ombre from her shoulders down. It’s pretty! I’ve always thought people with colored hair were cool. I, however, never joined the ranks of coloring my hair because… well, I’m not cool.

As a kid, I stayed the same. Same hair. Same clothes. Same everything. The one time I changed my hair style, there was teasing and laughing, so… yeah, I withdrew into myself and faded into the realm of invisible.

Where I stayed. Until I got older and thought “WHY?”

Why not be me? So, I’ve been trying. Being myself. Letting the crazy things that enter my head fly free!

wizardofozflymypretties

Well, on Twitter and maybe FB and here. It’s easy to sit in my house and type all the things. I don’t let the weird out every where. But maybe I should, well, not completely… let’s go slowly so as not to scared the natives.

So as I’m watching my daughter grinning in excitement at her blue hair, I decided something. I’m going to let the strangeness of me peek out. On Friday I’m getting my hair cut, and by cut I mean getting layers added through the bottom because I’m keeping my length, it’s mine. AND…

psychwait

I’m getting purple streaks added.

I know! And this right before my author appearance at my town’s 150th celebration. Seriously, I am going to have a table to promote ME and my work. Of course, my book isn’t out yet, but I am cooking up neat stuff, flexing my creative muscles, hoping to be memorable and connect with people.

There will be candy.

New me will be there… being me. It’s time to allow a bit of who I am and what I like to show.

I am magic. Why hide it?

HPwhoa

Think of me this Saturday as I attempt to interact with people, talk of my writing successes and soon to be published book. Think of me as I become slightly less invisible.

Think of me… and maybe send chocolate.

AND I WISH EVERYONE COULD COME!

anxiety, failure, fear, Julie Hutchings, lists, One day at a time, real life, Reuts Publishing, thoguhts, writing

There are moments when all the things I have to do attack. The list runs through my mind constantly. I don’t sleep, I simply repeat the list over and over and over.

Then anxiety.

Muppetexcited1

Then fear that I can’t.

Then the darkness of failure begins to stretch its claws across my brain.

Then I can’t focus. I can’t function. Anxiety paralyzes me.

Panic sets in.

I will fail.

stitchfaint

But doing nothing isn’t an option. Doing nothing is failure. All I can do is try.

So I make lists. I write down all the things. For some reason seeing it, being able to line the things up in a neat little row makes them less scary. Looking at the words, I can prioritize, push aside the things that can wait and allow my brain to focus on what has to be done.

HPrelaxhermoinegif

Which brings me to now. And my list… well, lists. Writing life list and real life list, two worlds that sometimes never get along. But they have to. For my sanity, or what’s left of it.

I can function under pressure. Once I get past the fear, I tend to thrive with all the things to do, with my list firmly grasped in my sweaty fist.

And, of course, I have my own little cheering section. People who tell me I’m fine, who tell me I can do anything, who tell me I’ve got this. My fabulous friends who know me, who know my craziness and still love me. For my hubs who keeps texting me to see if I’m okay… for the tweets and FB posts filled with encouragement.

minionsapplause

I LOVE YOU ALL!

I am okay. Today I will reach a place of calm and tackle the list.

So let’s end this post with a bit of excitement… A fabulous lady, one of my Twitter friends, Julie Hutchings @HutchingsJulie (who posted my madness story on her blog last March) has signed with REUTS! Go read about my new Reuts family member. I can’t wait to read her book!

despicablemeAgnesdance

Think of me as you set forth on your adventure today, as you face your lists and possibly demons and dragons. I will think of you.

So when I heard the fabulous Drew Hayes had written a sequel… I jumped for joy. JOY I TELL YOU!!!!!

muppetkermit-flail

FRED IS BACK! If you haven’t read THE UTTERLY UNINTERESTING AND UNADVENTOROUS TALES OF FRED, THE VAMPIRE ACCOUNTANT, GO… READ! Such a great book. I cannot wait for the sequel. It is my honor to help share the cover with everyone (or at least the three people who read my bloggity blog blog).

Undeath And Taxes Cover

After discovering just how filled with magic, intrigue, and adventure the parahuman world of being an Undead American can be, Fredrick Frankford Fletcher did exactly what was expected–he became a certified parahuman accountant. Myths and legends, as it turns out, are not so great at taking appropriate deductions and keeping their receipts, and Fred is more than happy to return to a life others view as woefully dull, expanding his accounting business to cater to various monsters and their respective financial needs.  Said monsters are, unfortunately, still spectacular at pulling Fred into trouble, though. And despite merely wanting to stick with simple paperwork, Fred once again finds he is going to have to deal with enchanted weaponry, government agents, possessed houses, and one enigmatic dragon’s interest. In the parahuman world, any business can turn deadly, even one as mundane as accounting.

Add Undeath & Taxes on goodreads

Drew Hayes is an aspiring author from Texas who has written several books and found the gumption to publish a few (so far). He graduated from Texas Tech with a B.A. in English, because evidently he’s not familiar with what the term “employable” means. Drew has been called one of the most profound, prolific, and talented authors of his generation, but a table full of drunks will say almost anything when offered a round of free shots. Drew feels kind of like a D-bag writing about himself in the third person like this. He does appreciate that you’re still reading, though.

Drew would like to sit down and have a beer with you. Or a cocktail. He’s not here to judge your preferences. Drew is terrible at being serious, and has no real idea what a snippet biography is meant to convey anyway. Drew thinks you are awesome just the way you are. That part, he meant. Drew is off to go high-five random people, because who doesn’t love a good high-five? No one, that’s who.

See Drew told about himself in first person on his website and twitter.

Confession time…

I have no idea what I’m doing. Ever.

I am not cool.

I know nothing.

Zooeymeh

When everyone out there in the world learns this… well, I fear being wrapped in duct tape, tossed in a trunk, and abandoned in a dark, evil forest where demons and faeries lurk… wait, I might like that.

It’s time to accept the fact that I just don’t know. I will never have a clue. I shall drift among the strange thoughts that creep in my mind and exist. All the while I will pretend I know. That’s what you’re supposed to do, right? Critiques? Reviews? Sure! I’m happy to offer my opinions, but feel terribly unqualified to do so.

drwhoshrug

Pretend. Live like you didn’t just trip over that non-existent obstacle. Continue on your merry way like you can see the path you’re on.

CAN ANYONE SEE THE PATH?

Anyone?

Sometimes I get glimpses. There are moments when I can almost view what waits in the future. But mostly I stumble around using the tools I have. My heart. My faith. My hope.

And I hold tight to the people who lift my spirits, to those who tell me nice things about me, to those people who make me smile. You know who you are. I am honored and pleased to be on this journey with you. Fear and anxiety are easier to face with awesomeness at your side. True friends make life better.

gleegrouphug

For all the writers out there… stumble forward with a smile. The Writer’s Voice… Query Kombat… and upcoming Pitchwars people, I applaud your bravery and never give up attitude, pushing through the nerves, terror, and in the end possible disappointment. Been there! Keep making friends. Keep putting yourself out there. Keep writing. I will forever cheer you on!

HPapplause

Possibly none of us know what we’re doing. But we’re DOING. And being together makes all the difference.

*puts all of you in my pocket FOREVER*
